It was way back in March when it was announced the brothers Coen would return to the Western genre which granted them their first Best Picture Oscar. The project is to be a remake of the 1969 film, True Grit, which as a showcase for John Wayne, gave The Duke his only Oscar. Now it seems the Coens may have their version of The Duke and it’s a familiar face to them, that of Jeff Bridges.
Bridges of course was the lead in in the 1998 cult classic, The Big Lebowski. He’s in talks to don the eye patch as an aging U.S. Marshall, together with another lawman, as they bring a 14-year-old girl into hostile Indian territory in attempts to track the outlaw who had killed the girl’s father.
I don’t think it’s any sort of hyperbole to say Bridges is a damn genius in Lebowski. I think the guy was great in last year’s Iron Man, too. He’s been nominated for four Oscars, but never won and only once since 1984 (2000’s The Contender). This could very well be his key to the top and get the recognition he’s long deserved. I’m definitely excited for this possibility. Can you see Bridges filling the shoes of a legend?
